I don't remember where exactly anymore, but Royce did explain to Hadrian a part of the reason. He said he was curious because of Esrahaddon's intentions after two years of silence. My personal opinion is that Royce wanted to find out more about Avempartha and elves without admitting it to anyone, including to himself. It's quite obvious, once you've read *The death of Dulgath*
