I like your writing, John.
I don't care if it's 'just' your job. You write very well, and we love the stories.... now JUST WRITE FASTER and we'll just have to buy you another house. Deal with it.
Obviously this means you don't need anything external to bring you ideas. Because you've got lots of awesome ones. I do hope that you love what you do, and would still do it if you didn't have a mortgage, or worries about food.
Scalzi plays at being a good guy but really he's a heel in heel's clothing whose contempt for his fans is all over his twitter account.
My favorite thing he said is also why i stopped reading his books. He thanked his publisher for a multi-year/book contract extending years into the future, and at the same time admitted it was his second book past deadline. Normally i wouldn't care about something like that but The Collapsing Empire being as short as it is, and ended the way it did, it's clear the series is being strung along to fulfill his contract. Love his writing, but im not going to support something like that
I think the thirst to pay a mortgage is incentive. I suppose for some you have shot down the romanticism of the author with a voice that hungers to be let out. An author friend of mine told me, however, that writing involves a skill in the ability to manipulate words and the art is to let them also reflect and connect with the senses.
I am a retired photojournalist, and folks think I'm lucky because I turned my passion for photography and writing into a career. It's still work and doesn't pay very well, as it's something many do as a hobby for fun. At times, my inability to make what I felt was a comfortable enough living for my family took its toll on me.
R.A. Salvatore said it well when he warned us of the danger in pursuing your passion as a career, "If you can quit then quit! If you can't quit, you're a writer. Anyone out there who wants to be a writer should clearly recognize that this is a brutal business, where even incredibly talented people sometimes never make a living".
Thank you for writing for us and your mortgage, Mr. Scalzi. Most of us understand it is still work, and we'd all like to do a bit less of that whenever we can afford to.
Just like I suspect George R.R. Martin hasn't finished A Dream of Spring because it's a ton of work and he has enough money to do other projects he is more interested in.
