Nives So did you have any offers during all these years?

Lois Bujold Two; an actual sale of a short story to the short-lived anthology TV show "Tales from the Darkside" which was actually scripted and shot -- alas, the script completely threw away all but one idea from my story, and reversed the morality of the ending. I've never bothered searching out the episode to actually watch.

And in the mid-90s, The Warrior's Apprentice was optioned and scripted by a major company, but the script was so far beyond dire as to be nearly indescribable. Nothing remained of the original story but a few names, misspelled. I was hugely relieved when it did not go into production, and the option lapsed.

Carol My experience with scifi made into movies can be summed up thus: Extremely disappointing. The movie in my head was SO MUCH better.

Seantheaussie For me reading the thoughts of interesting minds in interesting situations is what makes books better than TV and movies. Vorkosigan is my favourite series because of the thoughts of Miles, Cordelia and Ivan. If you wanted to film a Vorkosigan story there would be a massive amount of a frozen image on screen while situations were evaluated and plans created in Miles' mind. That wouldn't be riveting to watch.

Alealea I would rather have a movie on The Curse of Chalion... for Vorkosigan, a tv show would be better I think, but either way, risky. Still, nothing beats the books ^^

Jamie I remember that being something a little odd about the original movie version of Dune. It is difficult to get private thoughts, motivations, etc. conveyed just by facial expressions and meaningful glances.

Then again, what are these actors, screenwriters, and directors getting paid the big bucks for in the first place? ;-)

Edwin Tait Also, I think the world-building would be hard to convey in a single movie, so I tend to agree that a TV series or miniseries would work better.

message 8: by Ann (new)

Ann I normally shudder at the notion of my favorite books being made into films or television series, but some recent successes (The Expanse springs to mind) make me wish someone with a love of your works took a crack at scripting a limited series of one of your novels

Jonathan Palfrey Films made from books are usually less good than the original books; sometimes much less good. And the stories usually have to be heavily abbreviated to fit into the normal length of a film. It is true that books allow you to listen in to the thoughts of a character, whereas in films you have to make do with dialogue and body language.
