Hi there! I know this question is crazy old, but I’ve been scrolling the questions, and I’ve always really loved this but because I’m a neuroscientist, and I was particularly interested in dreams in college. We don’t understand them perfectly, but there is one theory that some dreams actually occur during the process of you waking up, but are presented to you by your brain as something you “remember” rather than something that just happened. So, if that’s the case, you’d be able to have a situation where you’re being woken up by thunder, your brain comes up with a dream on the spot that incorporates the loud sound, and then when you’re fully awake, you experience that as a memory of a dream. Brains are super cool but also trick us a lot. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read this if you have. I’m a huge fan!

That's fascinating, and is as plausible as anything I've ever heard or guessed about it!
