I personally think Werner threw it in the sea, because I don't see him as the type to take the diamond. Also, because of the curse, he couldn't have died if he'd had it. There's another question dedicated to the diamond mystery too, though, so go check it out!
This is exactly the question posed at book club. There is a quote towards the end that explains the answer the question about the diamond...the imagery fits that of the Titanic..the diamond stirring in the pebbles at the bottom of the sea..
I believe the diamond was still in the little grotto, lying among the pebbles just under the water.
That was my understanding too from the last three sentences in the chapter Sea of Flames- "Mantled with algae, bedecked with barnacles. Crawled over by snails. It stirs among the pebbles."
