Wow, it's funny how as kids we don't always see danger but that could have gone really, really wrong.
wait but this could actually be one of your novels. It reads like a backstory as to why a character would go into law enforcement-- teenage he and a friend were fooling around one day at abandoned house... older, creepy man a la Eric Greenleaf comes out, puts on black gloves, and that's all protagonist one remembers. When they come to, friend is gone and has never been seen since. Flashforward 20 years and now the investigate missing people. Reminds me of Art of Murder!
