Another contrast between the two is that McCandless survived off of the land whereas Knight stole everything he needed.
Good point, Douglas -- though it's worth noting that Knight probably survived off the land longer than McCandless -- during Knight's trip south, before he found his permanent site, he spent many months wandering the woods, and mostly ate berries and some roadkill. McCandless only lived four months in the wild.
I am less interested in comparing and contrasting the two Chrises (sp?), and more interested in what our cultural fascination with them means. I think many people yearn for adventure and a simpler life, while at the same time fear it. So we cling to, and are inspired by, people who have taken that path. Also, I think it may be uniquely human desire to explore, and to leave.
