I just asked because I read the genome report as soon as I could get my hand on it, yea I'm a science nut. The arctic breeds were the first to descend from wolves. Some time later, all the other breeds descended from the wolf and not from those first arctic breeds. This is all quite different that what was originally assumed.
Another interesting point. The German shepherd was originally developed as a herding dog, hence the 'shepherd" part of the name.
But in the sequencing of the genome, it was found that German shepherds are now closely aligned with dogs from the working group.
Because they have been used as working dogs all these years, their genes have modified along with the dog's usage and away from their shepherding roots.
Fascinating stuff, science.
