Dominic Mcintire I will second Mistborn. I just started reading it, and I'm really enjoying it.

Lori Brad, you might try Lindsay Buroker. I don't like dark fantasy either. I also enjoyed Dawn of Wonder by Jonathan Renshaw. I loved Uprooted. I have to reread The Stand periodically - I'm probably due again. I've read several of the others on Michael's list. A couple of them, I need to add to my TBR.

Bob In addition, check out The Faithful and the Fallen series by John Gwynne. It is similar to Michael's series in that it embraces some of the standard fantasy tropes and is a great example of how to tell a story.

Matt Tyree What an awesome question to ask Michael. His Riyria series were the first listens on Audible for me. I listen while I work, mostly. Loved those series and devoured them quickly. Then I was left trying to find other series that would sate my want to hear more until more Sullivan books came out. I fell upon a few series. Red Rising is in my library, but I haven't listened to it yet. I have been listening to the Cycle of Arawn and then the follow-up series, The Cycle of Galand, by Edward W. Robertson. The main characters in it have a similar buddy vibe as the main characters in Riyria. Not QUITE as endearing, at first mostly because I what I wanted to hear was more Riyria, but I grew to enjoy it. :-)
I will certainly be looking into Michael's list as I finish my current library.
Thanks!

Chip Love this question! Although I've read about half of these, My "to read" list just jumped in length!

Jim Marsh very solid recommendations! just a minor quibble: Red Rising is listed twice (I guess I should read it twice!) and Watership Down was by Richard Adams. If it was by Douglas Adams it probably would have been a very different book :)

message 7: by Richard (new)

Richard Ritenbaugh Anything by Jeff Wheeler should be on this list too!

message 8: by Kammie Rivera (new)

Kammie Rivera Love Eli Monpress! Just finished the 2 Rothfuss books. So glad I have your new book to go to next. One of my favorite books is Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King. You might recognize a character from The Stand.

Ann J.M.S. Harlan I adored listening to The Lies of Locke Lamora - just love the narrator's dramatic voices. Sure wish Michael could jumpstart Scott's process ... waiting for The Thorn of Emberlain is inviting despair, though what books already exist are great. I also am enjoying Edward Robertson's Dante and Blaise characters once they got going and not *quite* as much as Royce and Hadrian. Mistborn *and* the following era are wonderful, too - Mistborn is light in a dark setting and the later era explores darkness infiltrating a light setting. I add to the list most anything by Lois McMaster Bujold - all is character driven and leaves one feeling better.

Sandi I would add:
The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson
To the list above. So excited to read Age of Swords!

Brad Thank you all for the recommendations! This should help me find more entertainment while I wait for Age of War next year.

Unfortunately, my library card expired and I haven't been able to make it back yet, so I'm stuck looking for cheap books until I can use Overdrive again...
