David Leon (Joe Ashworth in Vera) could portray Skelgill quite nicely!

(However, I don't watch it - is he cantankerous enough?!)

He is not as a rule bristly with Vera; she holds up the role of cantankerous LEO very well on her own. But when she pushes him too far, he can give as good as he gets.
He's handsome. He's well built. He's Skelgill.
Looking forward to the next book -- and the TV series!
I would love to see this TV series. Cantankerous yes, but smart too - how is that portrayed I wonder.
Now I think about it, I suppose Morse had these qualities - at least, after he was brilliantly characterised by John Thaw.
You'll have to work fast, Bruce. I'm turning 81 next month. However, until we get the tv series, I think your idea of being on YouTube is great.
