In my opinion, for what it is worth, the joy of writing is in the writing itself. You start with a blank canvas, and then, one by one, your characters appear and almost become alive for you. Build your story around them and between you, you will find yourself setting out on a journey with them. Build them into your story line, add a lot of descriptions and you book will start to take shape. You notice I haven't mentioned publishers or stats. Don't even think about things like that yet. Ideas? Try trawling your past, remember those happy times, or even some more traumatic ones and then imagine "what if?" It often stimulates your imagination and can often be a start to a story.
