Loved Gabrielle, and Alexandria. Alexandria was so...feisty. Gabrielle, I guess was...terrified...
I loved Alexandria and hated Gabrielle because she came off winy to me until later in the book where she finally grew a pair. While I can agree that others should have been there more, I find you have to want to learn and she was in denial and unapproachable.
I have to agree with Chistine - some people are going to have a harder time with the transition than others. Realistically, having your world not just turned upside-down but literally violently transformed is not an easy thing to adjust to. The outward actions, getting through the day, is relatively simple. The emotions take longer, and in the meantime the tendency is to cling to whatever you have left that’s familiar. Also keep in mind that, unlike most of the series leading ladies, Gabrielle wasn’t changed by her lifemate. She didn’t have that emotional support and acceptance the others did. The mindset she was in would have become entrenched long before he came along. And we, as readers, have the knowledge that it will all turn out ok. She doesn’t. Everyone and no one bears blame in this situation. Gabrielle didn’t reach out, but we’re all taught that part of being an adult is handling our own junk, for good or ill. Mikhail and others didn’t see that she was struggling, but they had no reason to expect she would because the other ladies, even Alexandria after her initial freak-out, did just fine. It simply never occured to them that the others had lifemates to be their guides and anchors, where Gabrielle didn’t. Painful learning curve all around.
