I too got excited thinking I'd see a Dag and Fawn and their child's update. But I did thoroughly enjoy seeing Barr "grow up", and find Lily. I reread this series every summer as a kind of balm. I love it.
I really appreciated the different angle on parenting, as Barr has to confess to his history and figure out how to be a sudden father. It may have especially registered with me, since 21 years ago I married a widow with three children, two of who were teenagers. It's like suddenly being dropped into a foreign country. I liked this even better than the Penric stories, but I recognize that any objective evaluation is impossible for me.
