TanjanTarinat Thanks you for answering to my questions! I also like researching though I'm not fanatic. Interesting answers and especially the second answer was also opening my mind to think about my own cultural identity. I hope those of your books which I still haven't read will be translated to my mother tongue.

Lisa See You're welcome. Thank you for taking the time to ask me these questions! I'm so glad you want to read more of my books. I hope the ones you haven't read will be translated soon!

TanjanTarinat Yea I also hope that. As you said the research part is a basement for the story but not the main point. I was amazed how the second world war was described in Shangai gIrls. It was like natural part of the story, nothing more and nothing less. Just like all the other researching. That all gets mixed with the story of sisters. That's why I like your books and I think people can learn about China (and about life) trough those. And that's why I was curious to ask about it.

Lisa See Thank you! Your comments about Shanghai Girls have made my day!

Me Tanja, I'd like to thank you for your thoughtful questions, and Lisa thank you for answering them, Reading this conversation has been insightful, and inspiring. I had a similar feeling when reading Shanghai Girls and now China Dolls--and also the Red Princess mysteries (would LOVE another one of those!!). The cultural and historical backdrop wasn't a novelty, it was just the setting. While it was new to me and educational (and fascinating), it never felt drawn or caricature.

Lisa See You're welcome Jessica, and thank you for your kind words about my books. (I'm glad you would like another Red Princess mystery! Right now I don't have any plans to continue with them, but that doesn't mean I won't one of these days. Poor David and Hulan have been through so much. I like to think that they're on vacation somewhere, sitting by the ocean, under a palm tree, sipping drinks with those little umbrellas in them. Those two deserve a break! But one day they'll be called back to work.)

Me Good point, Lisa. I followed another heroine in a mystery series, but after awhile I was, like, "Lady, change your life! Start making smarter decisions! The heroine was always in these dark, depressing situations. But if Hulan can break through and be not just a survivor, but a thriver and role model, that will be great. Inspiring! Yes, she deserves some R&R for now!
