Lois Bujold That's everyone's first thought, including mine, but given outdoor walks can be part of my process, I'm not sure the idea holds up.

Frank Mikes I would suggest that it is a combination of many things. Starting with a decent education system that probably encourages the development of imagination and writing skills. As well, not a specific economic driver like say New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, where there is a lot of big business offering relatively easy career paths for many. Finally, once there is a writing community, this then encourages others to try and then keep going.

Judy R. Let us not forget that -- at least early in their careers -- writers are seldom rich. Unless you have a partner who works, it's better to live somewhere less expensive than the coasts of USA. And then stay there because you like it.
