Kathleen When we visited New Bedford a number of years ago, I learned about Helen Pitts Douglass at Frederick Douglass's 192nd birthday. She was his second wife and they were married for a long time. She served as his clerk while he was writing his autobiography and was a teacher and suffragist. I also learned about his first wife, Anna Murray Douglass, who was born free and worked tirelessly for civil rights. She evidently supported her husband and his cause financially and emotionally, along with rearing their five children (the youngest died) and suffering from poor health herself. I found her story very interesting and inspiring, and I'd like to know more about both of them.
