I actually thought the last mirror in the funhouse, the one with his own self image, would be right in front of the exit so the whole idea was he could run away from it. Also, sense the mirrors would reflect his SELF image, he wouldn't understand himself, merely more accurately understand how he sees himself which is a very important difference, especially as it would come after a whole host of images of how the people important to him see him. As for why he would go into an magic fun-house, I figured simple curiosity would drive him in. If he decided to stop by a carnival funhouse to reminisce about Mary and then saw it was magic, wouldn't he want to at least take a quick look inside? And once inside it it would be like a maze. I just thought it could make a very good short story to motivate Erik into some self reflection (pun intended) especially considering his recent issues in controlling his temper.
