15336 I read Native Son when I was twenty and I remember it as a profound reading experience. I often forget what I read as soon as I’ve finished. But 26 years later and I can still remember searing scenes from Native Son.

I’m currently reading The Once and Future Witches.

15336 I love you Smarty! I miss the old gang too! I’m thankful for my IRL book club with my sisters and some friends. But I miss my Filers.

15336 As usual, I'm reading too many things. I just finished The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women and it was great. Sad and infuriating, but great. I'm reading a poetry collection by Patricia Lockwood, Doctor Benjamin Franklin's Dream America on recommendation by Ben Loory, I'm re-reading Jane Austen's Emma and re-reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. That last one was an accident. I opened it up on my Kindle app to look up a scene for a friend and then I just got sucked into reading it. Again. It's so good.

I've never read Dennis Lehane. Are you looking for suggestions similar to him or just anything? Whenever anyone asks me for suggestions I always recommend the same book A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. It's one of those magical books that I think everyone should read.

15336 I just finished Vacationland: True Stories from Painful Beaches by John Hodgman. If you love John Hodgman (which I do) you will love this. It’s so funny I want to read it again immediately. I’m reading the new John Green YA Turtles All the Way Down for book club. And I’m rereading Emma by Jane Austen on my Kindle.

15336 Hi all, my cousin is working on her undergraduate research project for college and needs participants in this survey about reading and empathy. It'll take 10-15 minutes of your time and she will forever be indebted to you! Thanks!!!

15336 It made sense to narrow the characters down for film. And yes, the film was light on serious emotion, but it was still enjoyable to watch. And we laughed a lot. The actors were very winning. Can't wait for Harriet on the big screen!

15336 Who else watched the film on Netflix tonight? Congratulations to Jonathan! Yes, the title change is a sore spot and the movie is definitely lighter than the novel when it comes to the emotional weight, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. We laughed a lot. The cast was great and for me I think Burnett got the characters right. They felt like Johnny's characters. What did you all think?

15336 And happy birthday to you just the other day, Jennie!

15336 It took me six months to read Anna Karenina so I definitely wouldn't recommend that to someone with a year left to live/see. Good thinking with the short stories, Adrian.

15336 I would definitely not be one to suggest books that expounded on death or the afterlife. I would strictly suggest books that are enjoyable. Because I would want my friend to ENJOY their last year and only spend their time positively. So in that case my five would be 1. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith 2. Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen 3. Stardust by Neil Gaiman 4. I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith 5. Heavy Weather by PG Wodehouse

And yes, these would probably be mine too. Just books that are a joy to read.

Glad you're not dying, Dan.

15336 Manny and I definitely won't be able to afford Scotland. We are finally taking our long postponed honeymoon this March (to San Francisco) which will take the majority of his vacation time and all our saved fun money. We would be a definite maybe if a Dork was scheduled stateside, but even that would be a major maybe. I miss you all so much and missing the last two (!!) Dorks broke my heart. Life, man. Growing up is awesome and terrible at the same time!
