Bad Dirt by Annie Proulx
Review: This was one of 6 books that happened to be in a lookout tower where I spent the weekend. It was really serendipitous that I read this, as it wasn't even on my radar.
These stories are a little more hit and miss than Close Range (Proulx's first book of Wyoming stories). Some stories are masterful: The Indian Wars Refought, Man Crawling Out of Trees, The Wamsutter Wolf. The rest range from okay down to a little bit silly.
Proulx's use of a little magic is less effective here - it feels clunky and just sort of tossed out there for fun images (like poachers dropping literally into hell), with little connection to themes or character development.
The settings are strong, and the characters mostly are too - we're immersed in the culture of Wyoming ranchers.

On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century by Timothy Snyder
Review: On Tyranny was a quick read, as it's meant as a primer and tool in one. I tried to read it as such, but more than a few lessons aren’t particularly actionable. There’s a real mix of some lessons being practical and actionable, some illuminating or instructive on history, and some strong gut reactions to the outcome of the 2016 election.
It's a lot of angles in such a short book and I think they don’t do each other any favors. I also think this book leans more towards igniting fear than encouraging action, especially given all that's happened (and not happened) since 2016. Probably I would have felt differently in 2017. But for readers in 2025 and beyond, I’d recommend skimming and skipping around to find the stuff that inspires you.
