The vampire was a little over the top. He would have been a more interesting character if he was a little more flat. I’m fascinated by the whole “Chinese Room” concept. It makes me think of modern AI systems and how we tend to anthropomorphize them. I think i might read the sequel - it’s available right now at my library.

Ok there’s a lot going on here. This reminds me a lot of the 3 Body Problem as far as narrative goes. I recently heard the term “Starfish Alien” which describes an alien race so different from ours that it cannot be comprehended by human kind. There’s an old Russian novel called Solaris that addresses this perfectly. This book is unique, though, as the humans are so strange that it almost seems like they are the alien 👽 race.

That sounds good. Ive maxed out my library holds, but will add it as soon as the next spot opens up.

Hmmm… do we have enough participants to do that? 😂

It was comparatively paced well, although a bit formulaic. I hear it’s one of her first, though. So I’d read another one.

I feel like I just read a Hallmark movie.

OK: Hard-Boiled Murder Mysteries, NSFW Romantic Interludes, Sci-Fi, Strong Female Protagonist…
Why didn’t Nora Roberts just stick to this stuff? 😂

I think he is an acceptable amount of creeper. She could kick his 🫏 if she wanted to.

Wait, this is really Nora Roberts? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I feel like I’m reading a series of Japanese authors that are not that great. Anyone have any suggestions?

Gosh I really wanted to like both of these more than I did. I think that Modern Japanese noir is so cool that, in comparison, this one misses the boat. Japanese mysteries can deliver the hardest of hardboiled, but these did not…

I actually didn’t expect to like this as much as I did. I don’t really think it mimics “It” at all. The themes are very different. I feel like King’s book is more about the terror of getting older personified, and this one is more about the dark weight of evil that small towns can carry, especially when they have deep roots.

I’m looking forward to this one. I read this book “Hyperion” from this author, which was sort of a sci-fi Canterbury Tales and it was phenomenal!

Its never too early for Dracula

I think that’s actually the problem here. It lacked the pace of a good thriller.

I can see where this would be a much better movie. The writing was surprisingly good, but i didn’t really feel a great build up of tension. I love crazy lady stories, though. Very fun!

I’m still waiting for my library hold to come up - might be a while.
