I did a cross reference (copy/paste and find in page) between the two, and all 185 titles here matched up with the 184 titles in the checklist, so there does seem to be a duplicate, rather than something missing, or something that’s not part of the giveaway.
It might be a book listed twice on GR under two different versions of the author’s name. I did find another one on the list that was like that (it’s fixed and combined now) but unfortunately it wasn’t the duplicate.
It’s too bad you can’t sort lists alphabetically... that would make finding the dupe so much easier. :P

Thank you for finding. However, I can't seem to be able to remove either of them for some reason. I think if you remove your vote from rank 106, it will delete itself.

No worries. This is the first list I ever made. I didn't know how it worked either. :)

Hi TJ, I added it for you. GR might need a little time to catch up, so you might not see it right away. It should be at rank #181.

You can read the policy in the Librarian Manual.
If the author later publishes the book so that it is available to the public (Amazon Kindle would be one example), it can be added at that point.

That probably explains why some books I've read are not listed on my 2021 reading challenge..

Add them to your shelves but write the titles down. That way you know which books are missing should they dissapear and you can add them later again.
This happened to me with Brigham Vaughn - Train to Snowhere. I read the book on January 4th. All of a sudden it was gone from my 2021 challenge. Now it's added to Goodreads again and I was able to add it to my read shelf :)
If you've shelved a book that was removed from Goodreads and then added again later you have to add it to your shelves again. Goodreads won't do that for you automatically.

And it still isn't published but was added again, against policy. It will be deleted again so don't count on it remaining on your read shelf.

If a title is subscription only, and is published later as a Kindle or Ebook, then if you request in the Librarians Group that the ASIN or ISBN be added to the existing title, if it is still there, then a librarian can do that, instead of relying on a merge/delete in the super-librarian thread - assuming the cover is the same.

I was replying to Moomba specifically about Train to Snowhere, which I had already requested deletion of back on Jan 3 as I was working my way through the Winter Wonderland giveaway debacle. It was one of the titles without a valid "published" edition to merge with and it was finally processed last week. Within a couple of days a GR librarian had added it back to GR, against policy. This time I flagged the entry in the log so staff could address it, and it's already been removed for the second time. More than a few of the titles that were already deleted have been added back despite still only being newsletter/subscription only and I'm flagging them rather than rely on the delete this book! topic especially given so many of the adds/edits are GR librarians who either don't know or choose to ignore the policy. Staff needs to be made aware of just how many volunteer librarians aren't following policy so they can follow up with them directly.

I've had my say.

Goodreads is for the readers and not the authors and this is a horrible thing that has happened to us.

Hello, this January over 180 authors created the so called Winter Wonderland Giveaway. This contained full blown novels as well as novellas and short stories. Now it seems that a lot of these books have been removed by goodreads because they have been free - given in a huge marketing event.
These books will mostly still be available - either through the author, some will publish on amazon or they will be given away for newsletter subscibers.
Unfortunately authors report, that some of the books have been removed from goodreads because GR doesn't allow for example newsletter freebies.
That is not helpful and defeats the purpose of a site, that is supposed to be a help to track my books, my reviews and see what my friends are reading.
If goodreads limits the books that can be tracked by the way they can be obtained, what use is it then to keep track of my reading?
As a reader I want to track and review the books I've read on goodreads shelf. It doesn't matter to me where I got them from. There are countless other stories listed in goodreads that are either no longer available or only through the author^s newsletter, too.
So far I've seen a lot of readers dissaponted that their reviews are gone with the deleted books as well as of course the numbers in their reading challenge has gone down.
I suggest to review this policy - it does nothing but to annoy and anger the users.

It's not because they are free.
There are indeed countless other newsletter-only novellas/stories listed on Goodreads, but that does not mean they are permitted on the site. I just wanted to clarify those points. I understand where you're coming from, and maybe Goodreads will reconsider the policy someday.

Not saying I jump ship, but we’ll see.

1- Amazon is made aware of the fact that newsletter (and any other non-ISBN/ASIN) books added to GR generates interest from readers (who may have otherwise NOT taken a chance on a new author), who then share their ratings/reviews with other viewers/friends/followers, who are then compelled to check out that author’s published books... and then go looking for a place to BUY those published books.
2- A crapton of people cause a massive stink about it all over social media (preferably with a petition attached) and compel them to make the change just so all the negative PR goes away.
Of course, this is all assuming that Amazon has the ability to force GR to change their policy...
But for now, if you find a newsletter freebie listed on GR (and shelve/rate/review it), make sure you immediately back-up that info elsewhere (another site, app, your computer, etc.).

This rule has been in place since I joined GR back in 2014 and it's been enforced for at least that long since I personally had subscription freebies deleted from my account many times between 2014-2017. Most people never realize it when it's one book at a time here or there, the difference this time is that several titles were added en masse and now are being removed en masse. I raised the issue (with several dozen other users) at least twice, the last time in 2017. Others have also requested the policy be changed. GR has declined to change their policy each time, as is their right since the site is theirs to run as they see fit. I stopped using GR to track those reads in 2017 and stopped using GR to track all books in 2018 because their policies with respect to digital content make cataloging completely unreliable.
Hailey Turner didn't start anything, I did. I was too late to warn the user who added the bulk of the titles on Jan 1 because I didn't log into the group until later that evening, after all that time and effort had been wasted. It was a perfect storm, over 100 titles that don't qualify to be added to GR were added all at once and the GR merge/delete functions were down for end of year maintenance for several days, already with a huge backlog of requests. That meant the titles were going to be available to shelve, rate and review for a few weeks only to have them disappear once the backlog was cleared. I've been working on cleaning up the mess since Jan 3, creating valid editions (Amazon, Smashwords, non-subscription downloads) where available as merge targets so as little reader data and time is lost as possible.
Dodie wrote: "In the meantime, I’ve backed up my goodreads data and moved to another app."
That was a wise move, however you should be aware that the GR backup file is not 100% accurate. There has been a bug since at least 2019 where the backup leaves out books and drops or mixes up read dates. The more books you have shelved the more likely you are to experience the bug. Most people just assume the backup is good if they don't get an error. It isn't until they verify the file (go line by line) by comparing it against their shelves that they discover missing books and/or dates. Granted, almost nobody ever does that and many readers have so many books shelved they have no clue when some disappear from their shelves (happens all the time) or aren't included in the backup file. I doubt this will ever be fixed so view the integrity of your backups with a healthy dose of skepticism.

This was a full on assault and maybe Hailey Turner didn't start it but she did ask for her freebies to be removed from a website for readers to review and track their reads whether they are purchased or not purchased. It is an insult to her readers who take their time to read and review her books and she took all that away. Users can see this on her author page in an answer to a question asked of her and they can see it in the Librarian Group. So, whether she was first or not she's out there asking for the books to be removed. I'm a huge fan of her books, it's a shame she doesn't want us reviewing, tracking and discussing them.
I'm not going to argue with you over this though. It is hurtful and I'm pretty upset about all of it. It happened with the fanfic in 2014 and that devastated me. This was 7 reviews I lost not hundreds but it still feels the exact same way. I spend my time writing reviews, I shouldn't have to worry about an author asking for them to be removed.

Do subscription freebies (promo or newsletter) get deleted automatically? Of course not. Do they get deleted when discovered, yes. At least by librarians who follow GR policy. Until every user and librarian is aware of, and chooses to follow librarian policy nothing is enforced all the time across the board. I doubt very much either of those two circumstances will ever occur.
It also has nothing to do with purchased or not purchased, it has to do with published or not published. If she never plans to publish them she has every right to request their removal. The lack of a book record on GR (which requires a published book) in no way prevents readers from talking about, sharing or even reviewing these stories. The only thing their removal does impact is reading challenge counts and other reading stats on GR.
Jennifer☠Pher☠ wrote: "I spend my time writing reviews, I shouldn't have to worry about an author asking for them to be removed."
Your reviews being removed was simply a downstream consequence of her stories (not yours) being removed, which is why in a perfect world they would never have been added in the first place. You also should probably get over what appears to be a false sense of security surrounding your GR content. GR provides no guarantee/warranty of service to any of its users, readers or authors. GR is also not "for readers not authors" as I see bandied about so often. GR is for GR. Readers and authors each benefit in different ways from their use of the free service GR provides, but GR is far more aligned with authors than readers and you should never forget that. Regular users (readers) are GR product, not their customers.

Maybe Goodreads shouldn't let everyone actually BE a Librarian?
Deleting almost all these books in this giveaway feels like an attack no matter how you word it. They were absolutely singled out. You can talk protocol and guidelines to me all you want but this was a promo that a lot of people were super excited about and it's pretty shitty what is happening.
You are right though. They are Hailey Turner's books to do with as she chooses. Choosing which books of hers we can add to our shelves doesn't feel that good though and I think you are missing the point to all of this. THIS DOESN'T FEEL GOOD TO US READERS. Maybe she could have alerted her fan base she was going to do it so we could have been prepared. Stating we'd be confused between the difference between free books and books that cost money is insulting.
My feelings are hurt and all this talk about the book not supposing to be there in the first place isn't going to change that or even remotely make me feel better.
I'll go back over here to my fantasy world where I can read, review, chit chat and enjoy books with others on this site. Where authors appreciate the fact that we are reading their books. Talking about their books and recommending their books without someone trying to take that away from me.
Thanks again!

While some of the titles were added by regular users and a few authors who were unaware of the policy, the overwhelming majority were added by volunteer GR librarians. Not letting regular users add books to the database would not have helped much with respect to the Winter Wonderland giveaway.
Jennifer☠Pher☠ wrote: .."and I think you are missing the point to all of this. THIS DOESN'T FEEL GOOD TO US READERS."
Actually I believe it's you who is missing my point. I don't think anybody would disagree that it sucks people wasted time and lost shelved books & reviews. I'm simply trying to inform GR users of the relevant facts so they can manage their expectations accordingly in future, and hopefully all their *feelings* of attack, being singled out or insulted rather than externalizing blame where it doesn't belong. I'm not interested in making you or anyone else feel better, just providing data so users have the option of making informed choices in the future rather than ones based on misinformed opinions or continued ignorance of policies on a site they use regularly.
Hailey Turner did nothing wrong, certainly not hurtful or insulting and even if she hadn't requested the deletions herself they would have happened, that's just reality. It's also a fact that many users have been confused and frustrated over the years by the existence of GR book records for stories that were never officially published. Just because you chose to take her response as an insult doesn't negate other people's experience. The GR experience is much larger than your single subjective perspective. She had a good faith reason for her request on top of it just being documented GR policy. Continuing to badmouth and blame her for your own emotional response (which is 100% on you) to something she had every right to do is like blaming the cop who gives you a ticket for parking somewhere you shouldn't. It's not the cop's fault you parked where you shouldn't have and even if you were unaware you shouldn't park there, it still isn't the cop's fault you got ticketed. It's yours for not being aware of the rules of the environments in which you inhabit. If you were aware of the policy and violated it anyway because you were confident it wasn't going to be enforced, well then my only sympathy is for the other people who followed your lead and got burned too.

But now someone suddenly decided to enforce this rule and delete the books on this list.
That's what feels wrong to me. Since there are no authors on this list who are asking if their books can be deleted. 🤷🏻♀️

One aspect I have seen is the issue that books on Prolific Works and Book Funnel cannot be searched and found, for librarians to verify the story even exists (ie. they are not public. Same deal for books behind Patreon paywalls.)
I think that a place like GR that has resisted removing stories at author request, on the grounds that their mandate is a complete catalogue, should include these...
So I wonder if it would help if authors who wanted a BF or PW story included would put the book link in a librarian comment in the book page. In that location, it would be invisible to ordinary users, but a librarian could find and check it.
It might be a compromise option that would get around the issue of librarians not being able to even see the book page.

I understand why you feel that this has never been enforced if you aren't aware of any of your shelved books being removed. There are a few factors that would contribute to that perception, normal deletions are one at a time and spaced out over a longer time span, the policy is not typically enforced by GR librarians who read the genre (MM) themselves (having a vested interest in the books remaining on GR and their own shelves) and there is usually a significant lag between when these titles are added and when they are finally tagged for deletion. All of those factors are out the window for this promo batch because a) such a large # of titles were added at once it was instantly noticed b) the deletions are being processed by librarians who don't read MM and are less likely to subvert the policy or "look the other way" and c) being deleted asap rather than months later after readers have read, rated, reviewed and forgotten about the story so they don't even notice when it silently disappears from their read shelves.
The reality is, the policy has always been enforced by librarians who set aside their personal opinions, even if they disagree with it. I had multiple MM titles deleted between 2016-2017. The only reason I knew it was happening was because I maintained my book catalog in two places so I could easily see a discrepancy in the #'s.
GR book policy adherence is schizophrenic on a good day. Unless they're GR employees, librarians are all volunteers who can interpret and enforce librarian policy however they want. Policies aren't really policies when they aren't applied uniformly. If you are just now becoming aware of this fact, well your reaction is somewhat justified. You are free to rage against the GR machine all you want, knock yourself out. I tried the Socratic method on many occasions but ultimately I realized GR was an analog site stuck in the print world and completely incapable (perhaps even unwilling) of handling the new digital publishing world.
The kindest thing you can do for yourself and other readers when you find a book on GR that doesn't meet their requirements is to not shelve it, warn others not to shelve it and request its deletion sooner rather than later. The longer an invalid book record remains on the site the more people that will be negatively impacted when it is eventually removed, and to encourage that strikes me as unnecessarily cruel.
FWIW, if you want a preview of how the battle for subscription/paywall stories being allowed might go, check out this topic -> https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
That was my GR watershed, where I finally accepted GR was never going to be a viable site for tracking my almost exclusively digital reading obtained through non-traditional publishing channels.

"The following is a list of items that should not be added to the database:

***Stories only available via subscription to a newsletter, or via a website that requires registration"
https://help.goodreads.com/s/article/...
- "Stories only available via subscription to a newsletter": You don't have to sign up for a newsletter. When you actually click through it, it asks you whether you want the newsletter or not.
- via a website that REQUIRES registration: prolificworks makes it look like you need to register, but you don't: I got several of the short stories providing a fake name & fake email address. Therefore it doesn't strictly REQUIRE registration. (Though later I decided I actually WANTED some of the newsletters and signed up anyway, but that's besides the point).
- Shorts: The goodreads manual only talks about shorts, not novellas or novels. Many of the freebies from the winter wonderland giveaway aren't short stories but novellas. So at a minimum these should remain on goodreads.
Looking at all this I don't think there is a solid case for having to delete the books, therefore why not leave them on the site if it makes people happy :)

You've registered on PW as soon as you supply an email address. The email address is the key field of their user records. Whether you choose to associate a password with the email you've already signed up with creating a user profile, is merely a convenience for you that permits access to every download associated with that email address. Creating a user profile is not the same as registering, all that is required for the latter is the email address.
Kirsten wrote: "Stories only available via subscription to a newsletter": You don't have to sign up for a newsletter. When you actually click through it, it asks you whether you want the newsletter or not."
You're confusing the optional opt-in prompt for not signing up. The PW ToS permits authors to use mandatory newsletter signup (where you don't have to click "Yes I want to see more" and authors just plug your email addresses into their mailing lists) which means authors can and do send you newsletters despite having clicked "No" even if you happened to be prompted. I downloaded 26 stories from that group promo, to date I've gotten 35+ newsletter emails despite not having opted-in (clicked Yes) to any newsletters. One author has sent me 4 separate newsletters since Jan 7 alone. Just one of 35+ examples below:

The entire business model of Prolific Works (formerly Instafreebie) and Bookfunnel is to grow author mailing lists. Here's a really good explanation written for authors on how and why to use PW -> https://jerichowriters.com/how-does-i...

Example:
Out in Winter
First Blood
Long Winter
Soulbond: The Omega's Assassin
There are probably more too.
I do agree though, it is a frustrating situation. :-(

It surely would help for the books that aren't listed anywhere and keep getting deleted by a librarian and added again by other members, though. Adding them to this list makes it very easy for them to be deleted again. 😅

Wait a few years and your bookshelves here will eventually turn into your kindle content from Amazon. And even that is not guaranteed to stay constant, seeing how Amazon has “cleansing” tendencies every few years or so to remove books that ruffle someone’s feathers.

I contacted them and someone replied to me, but it's no use! Just today 5 more books from this giveaway disappeared. Or at least 5 from my shelves, maybe even more, the ones that I haven't read so I don't know. This is awful!

GR Team is messing with Goodreads again. There is a new version coming out soon. I constantly bump into their BETA pages and I don't like what I see. It's hard sometimes even find a book that's on GR - the book page is missing (between old and new version).
I bet they are also messing with the books that are already here in GR database.
I recommend you either take snapshots of your Bookshelfs or print them out. I am going to.

That way you can also import that file into any alternative to goodreads should you want to use one.
I’ve imported mine into an app called ‘reading list’ on ios that let’s you log all your books however you want. It’s nice and simple.
I’m also just testing out storygraph, which of course, let’s you log your books, but also has a social aspect to it, albeit not as extensive as goodreads.
I do feel better that my things won’t disappear without maybe me not even noticing it.

I was able to back up my bookshelf into Word. It shows covers, authors, ratings, your dates and your reviews. I also backed up all of my shelves (names of and amount of books) into Word. That way I will know if anything missing and from where.
Thank you for letting us know about "reading list" and storygraph. Going to check it out now :)
