Tondalaya Gillespie SO LIKE CHRISTOPHER...TO BE ENAMORED WITH HIS OWN PEN. HE DOES HAVE GOOD TASTE!

message 2: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Hamilton There ought to be some Fenton on this list and no Hitch reading list is complete without the King James bible

message 3: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Hamilton Also, Spinoza should make an appearance, preferably in the top 100.

message 4: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Marotta I agree.

I'm sorry, i wanted to add a lot more authors and books to this list, but you aren't allowed to have more than 200.

These are just the first 200 I clicked on before I was barred from completing the list.

Why don't you just delete all the books authored by Hitchens (because frankly, that's redundant) and replace them with books that he recommended or of the related...

message 6: by Emerset (new)

Emerset I agree with Shawn. Delete the books authored by Hitch and I see that Brave New World Revisited is listed twice (once on its own, once as a section of the original novel).

message 7: by Nikhilesh (new)

Nikhilesh I want to know books that Hitch recommended for English language and writing

Francios Listopia ..You don't know Christopher Hitchens until you've read ... Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam by Omar Khayyám?

I have long since given up expecting Goodreads to demonstrate a level of intellectual integrity one could expect from a sophomore in journalism or English literature but who vets this stuff? The pseudo-intellectual purveyors of fake news we constantly fight against? For intellectuals who (like Hitchens) who actually READ the books they talk about the particular edition or translation of any book is absolutely critical. That is especially true as to Hitchens and his references to the Rubaiyat.

Hitch only ever mentioned or quoted from Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám : a paraphrase from several literal translations /New York : J. Lane, 1897; Richard Le Gallienne's translation of Khayyam. Anyone who does not know that translation does not have a clue what Hitch was talking about or the point he was making.

But I guess sophomoric is sufficient ‘scholarship’ for Goodreads.

The next thing I expect to see is a Goodreads quote, “Beware of quotes you find on the Internet.” Thomas Jefferson.

That's true. There's a lot I wanted to add to this list. But the website wouldn't let me go beyond 200 or so.

Thanks a lot for making this list. How many have you read so far?

message 12: by BertieRussell (new)

BertieRussell In the preface to his book Love, Poverty and War he mentions that for him the gold standard in writing can be found in Proust, Nabokov, Saul Bellow, James Joyce and Borges. There's a story that I can't trace to it's source, that before 9/11 Hitchens had made up his mind to write a long book on Prousts À la recherche du temps perdu.

Did you come here searching for scholarship? Is it possible that one who has intellectual integrity might attempt to employ such a virtue when considering to write an elitist comment about an online resource open to and tailored for those who like to read generally? Wouldn't Hitch appreciate someone making an unqualified effort to provide people with a rough estimate of his reading habits? Would he not appreciate the Socratic method employed in this response?? I'll take my own advice and stop typing now.
