Library of America Wish List
The Library of America is a nonprofit publisher founded in 1979 with the aim "to help preserve the nation's cultural heritage by publishing America's best and most significant writing in durable and authoritative editions" (see http://www.loa.org/page.jsp?id=201 ). Growing steadily since its foundation, its 2010 edition now includes over 200 volumes, bringing together American authors of note from colonial writers to our contemporaries -- a truly magnificent undertaking!
Yet, for copyright reasons, due to as-yet to be concluded (or initiated?!) negotiations with the respective authors' estates, or for whatever other reasons -- not the least of which is, of course, the sheer abundance of writerly output available for selection -- some of America's foremost writers are still missing from the collection (and the more it grows, the more their absence is noticeable). So: who/which in your opinion are the as-yet missing authors and works that would equally deserve to be included in the Library of America's eminent collection?
(Please note: The complete catalogue of the Library of America can be found here: http://www.loa.org/catalog.jsp?sort=1 . Before adding a given book to this list, please double check whether the author or individual work you are planning to add is really not yet represented in the catalogue.)

Good news for those of us who wanted LoA to turn their attention to John Adams. They've now done precisely that, in two volumes edited by none less than Gordon S. Wood, to arrive at your local bookstores on March 31. See here:

And there are yet more good things on their way ...
