Books I Am Going to Hell For Reading

Since so many of my favorite books tend to wind up bashed by the media, I just thought I'd make an official list. Anyone else?

Becky Wow... "To Kill A Mockingbird"??

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

I think the list is a good idea... but it should be made a bit more apparent that this is about banned books and not about books that will damn you to an eternity of hellfire.

message 3: by C-tim (new)

C-tim Reading The The Da Vinci Code is like being in Hell.

message 4: by Raven (new)

Raven Black Twilight, yeah you already in hell as you reading the damn.

message 5: by RB (new)

RB Awesome list, this one! :)
Will definitely pick quite a few titles from it! :)

message 6: by Stacy Renee (new)

Stacy Renee (LazyDayLit) The only one I agree on in this list is American Psycho. That is the most twisted novel I have ever read. I would say the Twilight books are runner-ups. Reading those books were a waste of time but hardly reasons to go to hell.
I love this list name though.

message 7: by Xenophon (new)

Xenophon Hendrix The Exorcist seemed quite religious to me.

message 11: by Lizzie (new)

Lizzie How can someone go to hell for reading another religouse text. I mean if you do read Twilight there is something up with your literally taste but the Quar'an(soory for any misspellings)? Come one people let's try for some tolarnce.

message 12: by Sky (new)

Sky I've just found quite a few books to read now. Thanks!!!

message 13: by D.M. (new)

D.M. Cherubim Maybe this is a hot button, but could someone tell me why the Bible King James Version would be on a list entitled "Books I Am Going to Hell For Reading"? Is this like, mysticism or something? Or do you find out in the Book the awful truth about yourself?

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

No one is just going to go to hell for reading a fictional book. And there's nothing wrong with Harry Potter. It's not about the devil defeating God, it's about a boy who learns he's a wizard and goes to a special school :P

message 15: by Pixelina (new)

Pixelina are there ANY lists on GR with no Harry Potter in them?

message 16: by Tweedledum (new)

Because it was in ENGLISH!

Depends which side of the religious fence you are on. And there are a great many fences......
I speak or am I tweeting? as a liberal Anglican....... no one ever tried to censor my reading except my older brother who was dismayed to discover his sister reading Goldfinger aged 13.

message 19: by Tweedledum (last edited Oct 19, 2013 01:47PM) (new)

Tweedledum Surely the point of the list is that some one one somewhere or maybe a lot of folk all over the place or back in history actually believe or believed that reading certain books set your feet firmly on the road to eternal damnation.

Now you can be "damned " for asking to be educated if you are a girl living under Taliban rule...... That means All Books are banned and All Reading is forbidden to you. Oh and a career is against the rules too. Also no marrying for love.... Sorry what century are we in now?

Sadly many people do not get this! They do not understand the symbolism or appreciate the fact that JK Rowling is a Christian...... The same people by the way also condemn Narnia.

LOL

message 22: by Tweedledum (new)

Tweedledum Wow this list has certainly got people talking!

message 23: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten So basically this is a "Banned Books" list with a more creative title...?

message 24: by Carly (new)

Carly Thank you for creating this list. I look forward to reading some of these books, since they seem funny.

message 25: by KT (new)

KT "You've read 11 of the top 100 books".
Geez, thanks. And most of them are Harry Potter, too.

message 26: by Julie (new)

Julie I didn't take this just as a list for banned books but also books that the critics panned, books accused of plagiarism, etc. To me it was more about controversy, past or current, than anything else but this list seems to have different meanings to everyone.

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) Interesting list... I noticed a lot of these titles can also be found on the Forbidden books Listopia.

message 28: by Jacob (new)

agreed

message 30: by Katherine (new)

Katherine So..... I've all ready read the Harry potter books as well as the hunger games, lol I'm going to imaginary hell.

*add books to read list from this list*

thanks for more reading materiel for me to read, love you.

message 31: by Matt (new)

Matt What about paradise lost by john milton? why is that not on this list since the book practically tries to make you sympathize for the devil? And I know that's a poem, but its still a book and since the name of this list is books going to hell for reading not novels?

message 32: by Sennett (new)

Sennett I really dislike the title of this list.

message 33: by Becki (new)

Becki Basley I wish I could share this list and use it as a book challenge lol

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) Becki wrote: "I wish I could share this list and use it as a book challenge lol"

Pity I can't 'like' your comment :-)

Tweedledum Tweedledum wrote: "D.M. wrote: "Maybe this is a hot button, but could someone tell me why the Bible King James Version would be on a list entitled "Books I Am Going to Hell For Reading"? Is this like, mysticism or so..."

Strictly speaking it was Wycliffe's Bible (Tyndale's translation that was banned 70 years or so before the King James Bible was published. The Bible was deemed too dangerous a text for the ordinary man or woman to be able to read or hear read in English.... Latin only.... But this Bible formed the basis for the King James Bible. Obviously the King James Bible was the first to be given the official stamp of approval as an English translation. During Henry VIII's reign multiple copies of this were bought purposefully to be burned and removed from circulation. Tyndale himself was condemned to death and burned at the stake for translating the Bible into English.

message 36: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Peaslee There should be a "Books that will put me on the FBI watchlist"

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) Melissa wrote: "There should be a "Books that will put me on the FBI watchlist""

😁 Why don't you start a Listopia?
