message 1: by Ann (new)

Ann this list is inaccurate! Books needed to be published in the UK to be eligible.

message 2: by Phillip (new)

Phillip Edwards Hi Ann, I'm not sure which books on the list you are referring to?

message 3: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I don't think that is true anymore.

message 4: by Kay (new)

Kay This means any novel originally written in English regardless of the nationality of their author, with a print edition scheduled for publication in the UK between 1st October 2014 and 30th September 2015. Self-published novels are not eligible.

message 5: by Laff (last edited Apr 12, 2015 02:51PM) (new)

Laff I don't think Reservoir by Jon McGregor will be published this year so it is not eligible

message 6: by Laff (new)

Laff Looking for inspiration, I thought that I would see what those who had voted for Sweetland really thought about the book before I began reading it. Unfortunately, none of the seven who had voted for it had actually read it.

Laff, I guess I'm the other way around. I've read Sweetland, but have yet to vote on the list. It is about what you would expect from a book set on a desolate island off of Newfoundland, where the protagonist is a curmudgeon who is hated by most everyone he knows. With that said, it is extremely well written. Both the characters and setting are vividly drawn. The story is rich and nuanced. Definitely worth a read.

message 8: by Laff (new)

Laff Thanks, Mark. I will give it a go. I'm just surprised that people vote for books that they haven't even started reading.

message 9: by Wayne (new)

Wayne THE AMERICAN LOVER by Rose Tremain is a short story collection and, therefore, not eligible for the Man Booker

Fully correct, as far as I know.

message 11: by Antonomasia (last edited Jun 22, 2015 03:26AM) (new)

Antonomasia Jenni Fagan's The Sunlight Pilgrims is now scheduled for January 2016, so not eligible.
I've been looking forward to it a lot since the Granta extract, too.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

Go Set a Watchman won't be in there I'm afraid, small matter of the author being dead.

Leanne (Booksandbabble) Leena wrote: "Go Set a Watchman won't be in there I'm afraid, small matter of the author being dead."

Is Harper Lee dead? oh no :(

message 14: by Antonomasia (new)

Antonomasia Just checked a couple of news sites & can't see anything about that.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Harper Lee is not dead. That's one author whose death would be well covered by media here.

Leanne (Booksandbabble) Yeah, I thought I would have heard about it :D

message 17: by Phillip (last edited Jul 08, 2015 04:48AM) (new)

Phillip Edwards Yes, Harper Lee is still alive, but Kent Haruf passed away a few months ago so, sadly, he will not be eligible.

message 18: by Antonomasia (new)

Antonomasia Given the fairly small amount of translated fiction published in the UK each year, I can see it being quite feasible to set up one of these for the new-style International Booker, which will surely be higher profile than the IFFP... I might just do that actually, seeing as it'll be about 2015 publications, which are already easy to find out about. (With acknowledgements to Phillip for the idea.)

message 19: by Antonomasia (last edited Jul 08, 2015 06:13PM) (new)

Antonomasia Here it is, BTW:https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/8...
Update: As finished as I can make it for now.

message 20: by Lance (new)

Lance I believe Emily St. John Mandel's 'Station Eleven' and Sandra Newman's 'The Country of Ice Cream Star' are also eligible.

message 21: by Antonomasia (last edited Jul 13, 2015 02:43AM) (new)

Antonomasia @Lance Both of those were eligible for 2014 - Station Eleven was published 9th Sept 2014 and Ice Cream Star June 19th 2014 in the UK. Station Eleven is on last year's Booker Eligible list at no. 119: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/4...

Removed from list:
The Sunlight Pilgrims - Jenni Fagan (scheduled for publication Jan 2016)
Reservoir - Jon McGregor (Sept 2016)
Both should be eligible for Booker 2016, with those publication dates.

The Mirror & The Light is unlikely to be eligible this year, but I've left it in the list as we don't have a publication date, and there have been a few short notice book launches recently, like the Harper Lee.

Indeed! Sorry, my mistake...

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads You add books at the top of the list (at the tab next to "all votes") not down here in the comments section.

Your statement is not necessarily true. In order for one to be eligible to win a giveaway for a book on Goodreads, that book cannot be marked as "Read" in one's Books listing. Therefore, if I read a book in electronic form, whether through loan or purchase, or a loaned paper copy, and want to be eligible for a Goodreads giveaway of the book, I must mark the book as "Want To Read." Personally, I have many books I have read marked as WTR for giveaway eligibility purposes -- in some cases, i have posted a review of the book on Goodreads. Goodreads should reevaluate this policy as it renders the status of Books (read v. want to read) as wholly inaccurate.
