The Portable Veblen sounds like an interesting book, but I'm going to lobby for the only "old" book on the list and that's All the Living. C.E. Morgan in 2010 was picked by the New Yorker as one of the 40 under 40 writers to keep an eye on (along with Jonathan Safran Foer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and others that I have come to love). Her second novel - The Sport of Kings - was just published and it is amazing. But, this first novel - All the Living - is a gem.

Morgan in 2010 was picked by the New Yorker as one of..."I support the idea of reading some older books, but unfortunately while my county library service does hold numerous copies of The Portable Veblen, they don't have the C E Morgan book :-(. If it wins, I will buy a copy but I always try for library books first, in the interests of my wallet & my groaning bookshelves!!
