What is Sci-Fi?
- Sci-Fi is short for science fiction and it’s a main genre with sub-genres of its own.
- It involves futuristic concepts.
- This can range from advanced science or technology, time travel, space exploration, parallel universes and alien life forms.
- Sci-fi can sometimes be confused with fantasy but the big difference between the two is that sci-fi is NOT magic-based like fantasy is!

IF YOU WANT TO RECOMMEND A BOOK/GRAPHIC NOVEL FOR THE LIST:
The Rules on Recommending:
- It can be a book or a graphic novel.
- It MUST belong to the sci-fi genre.
- The book or graphic novel must be in English or translated to English.
- They can be MG, YA, Adult or New Adult.
- If the book/graphic novel is part of a series please only recommend the first in the series.
- You can recommend as many books or graphic novels as you like to be added to our list.

Hey guys I know I’ve set this up so late but can we get as many books for our list as possible, especially MG ones! I’m really looking forward to reading sci-fi books next month!

message 3: by Kelly (new)

Kelly I added Dragon Pearl and marked that it is by Rick Riordan; my bad! It is by Yoon Ha Lee!!

Haha it’s ok Kelly I noticed it straight away and fixed it!
It’s interesting that having his name on the book because it’s his imprint means it sells better but it also can have a negative effect of overshadowing the lesser known authors in our minds.

message 5: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Thanks!!

He gives some great insights to his "Rick Riordan Presents" series on his website!

AurorainBookland Dragon Pearl and at least 2 others on my TBR, great picks! Of course I voted on accident, sorry Dragon Pearl because dragons. Still in my dragon phase lol.

Gabby Duran and the Unsittables The Beginning by Daryle Conners another option this series is good. This book has the first and 2nd book in one. These books inspired the Disney Show, the authors even wrote a 4th book to tie it all together.

Laura Collins Can’t work out how to add to actual list! Sorry - first-timer here!

I’d like to add:

Wonderscape by Jennifer Bell (MG)
The Stranded by Sarah Daniels (YA)
Escape Room by Christopher Edge (MG)
Between Sea and Sky by Nicola Penfold (MG)
The Many Worlds of Albie Bright by Christopher Ege (MG)

I feel like Lorien Legacies series is more fantasy than sci-fi but with series like that it has elements of both so it’s hard to tell. For both of these books you can only add the first book of the series to the book list above because after I feed the titles into the random picker and someone rolls it and gets your recommendations they wouldn’t be able to read the second book if they haven’t read the first.

So do you want me to add the first books from both the series to the list? You can still read the second books next month if you want and comment on it on the discussion page even if they’re not on the book list.

Is Wool really only 55 pages? I definitely want to read it now!
I’ll add these books to the list above!

Who doesn’t love a good dragon! And I’ll add the first Gabby Duran book on the list above. It’s a great size and looks interesting, I’ll definitely try and read it next month. I’m not familiar with the Disney show (they made it after my time) but I did recognise the name.

Hey Laura, no worries, I’ll add them to the list above for you. And it only lets you add one book so it’s a good thing you left a comment anyway. Also I’ve had a copy of Escape Room that I’ve been wanting to read for ages and I had no idea it was sci-fi!

Satrina T I added one but I would like to add two more and I don't know how:

- Redshirts by John Scalzi
- Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

No problem Satrina, I’ve added them for you above! I read the Uglies series a few years back. Never read the last book so no idea how it ended but it was an interesting concept.

I found out about the show then saw the books at the bookstore. Never too old for Disney. I like both even though the show gets a little gross, not my fave show but its one of the few decent MG shows out there. Content for middle schoolers is my favorite content, most skipped over age range in TV and movies though.

Nowadays I think the Disney shows are too immature or cringy. And you know me, I read mg as my main age demographic so I don’t look down at things because they’re aimed for kids/young teens and call them childish without reason. It’s just that old Disney channel shows (wizards of Waverley place, Hannah Montana, Sonny with a chance, Suite Life, etc) have a genuinely funny feel to them. And I’m not just saying that because they’re nostalgic (although I did grow up watching them). I guess even some of the old shows I cringe a little when watching them now when the jokes feel too forced.

I guess I prefer the british shows from my childhood. I’ve always liked English humour over American humour anyway, it usually feels a lot less scripted or with the “pause for laugh” type of humour.
Have you ever heard of The Sleepover Club or The Saddle Club? I used to love those shows and they have a billion books so it reminds me of the babysitter’s club books that you talked about a while back.

Yeah, new disney is better Diary of a Future president dont seem to have forced humor. No laugh track. But maybe its cringy IDK my likes differ from others so *shrug*
Saddle Club is on my watch list on Netflix G rated horse content is my cup of tea my aunt owned horses. So now Im a horse girl lol. Never rode, sat on my aunt's tame adult female horse once. Was going to get a helmet and ride her at a walk but they got rehomed. This was ages ago.

Saddle club had me obsessed with horses when I was young. It’s so cool you got to sit on a horse! Shame you never got to ride it, hopefully you have a chance with another horse in the future. I’ve never ridden a horse which is surprising because I live in Dubai and it’s famous for 3 things: 1. Skyscrapers 2. Horses and 3. Golf. One day I will ride a horse! Even though I’m scared of animals lol

And omg yeah those laugh tracks kill me. It makes the humour feel so forced sometimes. Speaking of G rated shows on Netflix, have you watched Alexa & Katie? That was such a feel good show I miss it now it’s over. I’ve never found a genuinely funny teen show like that since😞
