So there's great debate about your book Missing Grace. Mostly if Ben had sex with Rebecca during their relationship? At one point he even describes it as a friendship, he kisses her on the cheek, but he also talks about how they have a key to each other's houses, about how a drunken conversation turned sexual. There's also a part where he says she didn't insist on staying at his house when she wasn't asked.

Hi Veronica, thank you for reading my book and for the thoughtful question.
Here's my take on their relationship: I wrote their scenes as if they hadn't had sex. It was something he was avoiding, but how does one avoid it when they're dating for months? So when a drunken conversation between them turned sexual, he avoided having sex with her by distracting her with something else she wanted - the key to his place. He was basically placating her. Not maliciously. I just truly believe he wasn't ready for that level of intimacy with anyone other than Grace, and deep down didn't want to. But he did care about Rebecca. He just took it slow - super slow - and she was patient enough in that area (all areas really) to stick it out with him and wait.
Thanks again and hope this helps the debate.

Just finished reading We Were Once and I just had to tell you how much I connected with your views of the New Havener being a second class citizen to the Yalies. I grew up in New Haven and graduated from one of the public high schools in the late 60's...at that time very few, if any, New Haven students were accepted into Yale. So...I was wondering how you researched this aspect of your book? Thanks, Diana
