No doubt you have more book ideas than you will ever have time to write. But not all ideas transform into coherent concepts. Do you have a process for determining which ideas will actually sustain a novel?
Dennis Lehane
You just sort of feel it out. I’ve been doing this enough that I can usually gauge within a few days of turning an idea over in my head if it has the legs to run the length of an entire novel. But there’s no process beyond that, at least not one I’m aware of.

Could you talk a little bit about what the city of Boston means to you and the role it plays in your work? In many ways, geography in your books acts as its own character and is one of many things I love about your work. What's your relationship to this city? More generally, how does the geography of a place you're writing about, such as Oklahoma or Miami, help you write the story?
