Goodreads asked Christopher Rice:

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

Christopher Rice No experience is wasted. Truly. No matter how unpleasant, difficult or downright disturbing, there's always a sense that if it happened to you, it might fuel your writing. This is not the same thing as saying, "You only write what you know" or "Just write what happened to you over and over and over again." Instead, this is a recognition that the emotional quality of any experience might later contribute to a new character or help influence a new storyline.
