No experience is wasted. Truly. No matter how unpleasant, difficult or downright disturbing, there's always a sense that if it happened to you, it might fuel your writing. This is not the same thing as saying, "You only write what you know" or "Just write what happened to you over and over and over again." Instead, this is a recognition that the emotional quality of any experience might later contribute to a new character or help influence a new storyline.

I don't really have a question, just a comment. I just finished reading "The Vines" and I loved it! I am hoping the ending is indicative of a sequel. Since I haven't read any of your previous titles, and you were totally unknown to me, I did not realize who your mother is until I read the Acknowlegment section. I will be added your other titles to my TBR list.

I could swear I read once that you resigned as president of Lambda Literary to protest them changing the rules so that only LGBT authors could be eligible for the Lambda Literary Award. Am I crazy? Because in Googling it, I can find no evidence of this. Can you clarify what went down?
