It's not based on any family happenings in my own family. But I did interview many people in the U.S. and China, who greatly influenced the story. For example, there are details from Li-yan's life that come from two women I interviewed. I also interviewed several girls who'd been adopted from China. I used some of their words in the group therapy chapter.
