Being a writer has many perks (enough to balance its many downsides) but as I've gotten older, I've begun to realize what may be the best. Writing feels wonderful even if you're never published, but I do have the good fortune of being well published, and that's what I'm talking about. Sure, when I was younger I loved the prestige of being published and getting my picture in the papers (or, these days, the Internet), but now what matters most to me is feeling that I will remain, in a sense, after my life ends. That I will leave myself to my family and friends in my books. That even by some strangers I might be remembered. The Best Thing.

I've been revisiting your Book of Isle series and it's exactly the kind of comforting escapism I need while the rest of the world goes insane. I also loved The Oddling Prince (and really, all of your fantasy work). My question is, are there any plans for The Oddling Prince to be part of a series? Or for any other new fantasy work from you?

I wish I had dozens more to read. I'm interested in how long it takes you to get a good first draft done -- and if you find yourself having to do a lot or a little rewriting? Also, did the first in the series take longer to write than the subsequent books? Did any of the books "write themselves" much more quickly or more slowly than the others?
