I really loved Burning Bright. You brought Blake and his unorthodox views and that whole Napoleonic, post revolutionary world alive. How did you research the novel with the circus and all?

Tracy Chevalier HI John,

Thanks for your question. Blake was easy to research as a lot has been written about him, including work by Michael Phillips who has extensively studied Blake while he lived at Hercules Buildings. As for Astley's circus, I was lucky to get hold of the PhD thesis by Marius Kwint, which you'll see listed in the Acknowledgements.

I'm curious to know whether you whether you were interested in seeing it, and if you have seen it, what did you think of how Francis Lee (who directed & wrote the screenplay) portrayed her based on the research you did?

I have read all of your books but for some reason it is Falling Angels that I keep going back to over and over again. To me it is the most complex and also the best of your works. What I found especially interesting is its portrayal of the suffrage movement. Most authors hold up the suffragettes as heroic icons. What led you to write a more negative story about women's suffrage?
