I went on vacation to a farmhouse in France with friends one summer during the time when I was doing my PhD at Oxford University, and whilst I was there I had the idea for the story that ultimately became my novel. The idea rolled around in my head for a good many years before I felt able to make a start on it; I think perhaps I knew I needed a bit more maturity as a writer to be able to tackle it properly.
