I can kill off any of my characters! And I do! That's part of what keeps me hopping during a draft...knowing that any or all might die. I don't do it for sheer joy, or to be cruel. The story is the boss. If the story kills them, there's nothing I can do to write their way out of it.
Though, at first I did want to kill Carmel in the Anna Dressed in Blood series. But she refused to die.
