I had the opportunity to work with him when I was a young publicity assistant at Penguin Putnam. His gifts were extraordinary, but more remarkable was just that he felt like this completely normal, accessible person. He was in possession of a tremendous ability, but he seemed like he could be your cousin from Long Island. I was impacted by how the normal and super-normal dwelled side-by-side in him. Eloise may have come from that idea. But she's utterly her own person, evolving for me over a series of novels and short stories. Thanks, Cass!
