Yu CaifangSS asked Michael Finkel:

I want to know whether it is exactly a kind of memoir or a kind of literary biography? What is your attitude towards such kind of actions as escaping the society?

Michael Finkel I consider "The Stranger in the Woods" to be a biography, salted with a bit of philosophy on the concept of being alone. If a person wants to escape society, I'm fine with it -- I support it fully, in fact. But not, as in Knight's case, if there must be stealing or other people are being harmed. Then it's a lot less clear whether I can support such actions, and it's this lack of clarity, I believe, that makes Knight's escape even more compelling, and controversial.
