Vicenta asked Katherine Arden:

At which age did you realize you want to be a writer? And did it take you long before you become a professional one? :)

Katherine Arden I wrote a lot of stories as a kid. I wrote a terrible novel in high school about ice dragons (original, I know, especially these days). But I never thought about being a writer or writing professionally until after I graduated college. I started writing BEAR just to keep myself entertained, recalled how much I enjoyed the process, and decided to try and get it published. After that, one thing rather led to another. It took me three years from starting to draft my first book to getting a book deal, and then publication took two more. So three or five years depending on how you measure.
