Ramon Zen-Life asked Michael J. Sullivan:

Hi Michael, I am an avid fan of your books. After reading The Riyria Revelations several times I am conflicted by one of the characters. Is it your intention for Amelia to be an opportunist? I view the majority her actions involving Empress Modina to be in her own interests and not out of loyalty or love. I do not fault the character either way, i'm just curious as to your view of her.

Michael J. Sullivan Hey, thanks for reading the books. I'm glad you enjoyed them and I'm honored that you've read them multiple times. No, definitely didn't think of Amelia as an opportunist. She was picked out of obscurity and promoted to a position above her rank, but she always felt sorry for Modina and worked hard to make her life better. As it turned out, Modina did the same for her. So, yes, there was love and loyalty between the two.

The other thing to keep in mind about Amelia, is she was constantly between a rock and a hard place. The regents wanting results and she constantly unsure how to produce them. Most of the time she was scared for her life.
