What I understood is that Frederick's parents were prideful and wanted to move up. His father was an official and it looked good for his son to be admitted to the prestigious school. Frederick was just a humble, sweet kid who would do whatever his parents wanted. And there's a statement near the end that makes it sound like his mother new it was wrong to send him and now had some regrets.(less)
