I try to make an outline first. Then I put something down on "paper" (on screen, actually). I expect that what I write will not be very good. I'm looking to get the gist of what I want to say. It does not have to be perfect at this stage. But then later, maybe a few hours or a few weeks or a few months, I come back and fix it. For me writing is all about the second or third pass.
