Did any of the characters change unexpectedly as the draft of Caraval was being written? Or was there a plot twist that you didn't plan on writing?

Stephanie Garber Yes and yes! When I was drafting Caraval I wanted to be surprise so for the first half of the book I didn't actually know if everything was real or just a game. So while I had ideas of how the second half could turn out I was surprised by how it did. As far as characters, Scarlett's love interest wasn't originally supposed to be a main character or her love interest, but they had such good chemistry I just kept putting them in scenes together.
