I made it up as I went--I literally didn't know what else was on the ship until the characters stepped foot there.
I remember that when my publisher wanted to design the blueprints for the ship, they asked me what the outside looked like. I told them I had no idea--none of the characters went outside the ship! I had to scramble to come up with something! (And ended up basing the outside of the ship on the Planet Express ship in Futurama.)
