A Goodreads user asked Michael Grant:

What was the message you were trying to send in the series? You know! Like, the theme.

Michael Grant I never deliberately send a message or decide on a theme. I create a situation, then populate it with characters and walk it forward page after page, figuring it out each day along with the characters. It's all improvised, I don't plan much.

That said there are certain themes I tend to go to: redemption, individual responsibility, the importance and complexity of being a moral human being in immoral circumstances, the nature of truth.

I think the only message I consciously planned had to do with Edilio. I wanted to take a young man with no status, no advantages, and show that a good man, a virtuous, decent man was as important and necessary as someone with powers.
