Donna Allen
Donna Allen asked Chris Bohjalian:

What advantages do you feel that you received as a child growing up that contributed to your success as an author? How do you think it would have impacted you as an author if you had not had those advantages?

Chris Bohjalian I moved a lot as a kid. Not kidding, not being glib.

At one point, I went to six public schools in five years.

Scott Fitzgerald once said -- and here I am paraphrasing -- that a writer is always that kid with his face pressed against the window, on the outside looking in.

That was me.

I think writers are observers.

The really good ones are empathetic observers.

The spectacular ones? Empathetic observers with deep imaginations.

I hope this helps, Donna.

Thanks for asking!
