I was amazed by The Enchanted and moved by The Child Finder. You write about deeply disturbing subjects but never trivialize, moralize, or use gratuitous drama, yet tell difficult stories that reach our heart and soul. How do you form books that show ordinary people, heroic in their way, without preaching and judging? Perhaps there is no answer, other than you are extremely talented. Thank you.
Rene Denfeld
Aw, thank you!! I think it's because I write about the kind of people I know, in real life. Katherine Dunn once told me the job o the writer is to tell the truth, not what they think others want to hear. That helps me get away from stereotypes and into the beautiful, complex, haunting realities of humanity. I also believe in honoring victims, even fictional victims, and would never exploit their trauma or violate their dignity. Thank you for writing me!!!

Just finished reading this book and WOW!!! One of the greatest things I feel I have ever read.
Two kind of non-important question that keeps following me are these:
1. Was there a reason you chose to conceal who the narrator was, but make subtle hints to him, throughout the book?
2. You clearly chose to conceal this, but do YOU know what Arden did?

My book club just finished discussing The Enchanted. I brought up that I thought The Boy with White Hair was a younger version of Arden. Can you please let me know if I was thinking the right way or way off base? Really enjoyed this book and find myself still thinking about it almost a week later. Look forward to receiving answer from you!

Hello Rene! I am re-reading The Child Finder for a book discussion next Tuesday. I am the group moderator at my library. I love the character of Naomi, and am glad to see The Child Finder listed as book 1 of Naomi Cottle. Are you currently working on the second book? I have a list of questions, a copy of your interview with Psychology today, and a feel this book will make for a great discussion.
