Charles Todd CHARLES AND CAROLINE: A FORGOTTEN PLACE is coming out in September—and that’s the new Bess. It’s set in Wales. Although the war is over, for those who were badly wounded, it is doubly difficult, because they often have nothing to return to. And nursing Sisters like Bess often find themselves trying to keep men alive in a different sense—preventing the despair that leads to suicides. One particular case sends Bess to a desolate peninsula where Captain Williams has taken refuge with his widowed sister-in-law. She’s hardly arrived when he tells her to leave, that it isn’t safe there. And Bess soon learns that he’s absolutely right.

The next Rutledge is already in production for next winter. THE BLACK ASCOT involves a ten year old murder. The killer is still at large—or is he dead? No one knows. But before Rutledge can find out what happened to Alan Barrington, he’s going to have to dig into the past, and that will stir up trouble that he never dreamed of. It will either end his career at the Yard or find a dead man alive.

So with these two in the works, guess what? We’re well into Bess for 2019 and we have a sneaking suspicion that Rutledge is going to one of the places in England we find most intriguing, when it’s his turn.
