Why kind of music, if any, inspires you? Do you listen while you write?

I have a playlist for any book in progress of songs that remind me of characters or themes I'm working with on the page. But when I write, I can't listen to music. I am too distractible! It's the same reason I can't work in coffee shops: too much to look at, too many conversations to eavesdrop on. I do best facing a wall, in silence. Seriously!

I am currently working on a young adult novel and I am telling it through the perspectives of both main characters (one male and one female). I have been writing in the 3rd person for both but I'm afraid it will create a disconnect between the characters and the readers. In your opinion, would it be better to write from the first person?
