Zach asked Maurice Carlos Ruffin:

Aside from knowing what you're talking about when you set stories here, what do you feel New Orleans has contributed to your writing skillset that you might not have gotten living in other US cities?

Maurice Carlos Ruffin New Orleans has a particularly sense of dark humor. However, this humor is not undercut with bitterness. It's undercut with hope and hedonism. When we throw a jazz funeral, we really are happy to send the dead loved one off in style. No one is forcing us to celebrate in the face of pain. We enjoy it.
