I was reading Colleen Hoover, Tijan, and some other YA/Contemporary novels, and I loved the high school angst but done in a riskier way the way they did it. I love love-hate romances, and I filtered in my own experiences with bullying to piece together a story. I think the popular guy/nerdy girl dynamic is fun to explore, and yeah, I simply thought about what I liked to read (the best elements) and tried to put them into one book.
As far as their names, Jared was originally Jeremy, but I decided I wanted something harder, and Tate just popped in. I took no time in coming up with their names. It's like they existed before I sat down to type :)
